Stroke Recovery

A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off and brain cells are damaged or die.

A Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) is an event, sometimes called a mini-stroke, with stroke symptoms that last less than 24 hours before disappearing. A simple symptom checklist to remember has been devised. This is to think of the word F.A.S.T.

That is:

  • F - Facial weakness. Has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile?
  • A - Arm weakness. Can the person raise both arms and keep them there?
  • S - Speech disturbance. Is their speech slurred?
  • T - Time. Time to call 999 if you see any single one of these signs.
