Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a mechanical abnormality involving degradation of cartilage and subchondral bone in joints.
OA is the most common form of arthritis and the leading cause of chronic disability it affects about 8 million people in the United Kingdom. Symptoms include joint pain, tenderness, stiffness, locking, and sometimes a swelling. Through a variety of causes, such as genetic and mechanical, there is a loss of cartilage that causes bone to be exposed and damaged. As a result of decreased movement secondary to pain, muscles may atrophy, and ligaments may become more lax.
If pain becomes debilitating, joint replacement surgery may be used to improve the quality of life. Our treatment generally involves a combination of exercise, lifestyle modification, and soft tissue massage. We are often able to relieve symptoms to the point where surgery is delayed and the outcome of surgery is improved. Why suffer pain unnecessarily?
